I always felt like VTI should have been something like VTUS (for the US) or VTD (for domestic), and VXUS could have been VTI (for international) or VTF (for foreign). It makes more sense to me now, but when I first saw VTI, I thought it was an international fund.
You’re right! Should we start a petition?
Haha, maybe, but it’s too late now. If I could go back in time, I’d definitely suggest it!
When you remember that everything revolves around the US, it makes more sense.
VTI - T stands for total, but ‘total’ means just the US since that’s all that matters.
VXUS - instead of calling the rest of the world something nice, we just call it ‘excluding the US.’
guts, glory, America!
These products are mainly aimed at the US market, so I think it’s fine.
Yeah, VTI is ‘total’ but only for the US because it’s simpler for taxes. VXUS, being international, comes with more tax complications and tends to cost more.
What’s a kilometer anyway?
I almost asked if you were into something crazy like the metric system, but I didn’t want to insult you. Now, excuse me while I grab a 1.5lb burger and put it on my credit card!
Nah man, I love the US! I bleed red, white, and blue! Also, I actually like Fahrenheit for weather.
This guy must be a Russian plant if he’s that patriotic.
Now this is the kind of important investing discussion I come here for!
Vanguard Ex-US makes perfect sense to me. Vanguard Total Investable works too, but I can see why some might prefer calling it Vanguard Total International.
VXUS = Vanguard Ex-US, it’s pretty clear. iShares does something similar with IXUS.
Yeah, I get it now, but at first, I thought it was something like ‘exchange US’ or something.
One day, Saturday Night Live will probably do a George Washington skit about all this. Nate Bargatze might even play the role!
Yeah, just like how ‘the moon’ should have a better name, but who do we even talk to for that?
Nope, ‘X’ means ‘exclude’ in tickers.
So you’re saying we should change all the tickers with ‘X’ in them just to make 12-year-olds happy?
