What physical stuff keeps its value over time?

I’m looking for ideas on things that hold their value long-term. This isn’t about getting rich, but more about preserving what I already have. I’d love suggestions on physical things that don’t lose value quickly.

I’m not talking about stuff like houses because those are out of reach for most people on a regular salary. Things like gold or collectibles come to mind, but I want to hear your thoughts.

UPDATE: Thanks, everyone! These responses are super helpful. I appreciate how honest and thoughtful this forum is. Definitely giving me a lot to think about.

What about land? Even small plots can hold their value well.

Instead of just asking what keeps value, think about things that are both useful and can retain value when resold. That’s where the sweet spot is.

Can you give examples? Most useful things seem to wear out, and collectibles that gain value aren’t exactly practical.

@Morgan
Maybe land or a small business? Both are useful and can maintain or grow in value.

@Morgan
Transferable machine guns. They actually go up in value.

That’s gotta be the most underrated comment here!

@Morgan
Certain vehicles, especially classic ones, can hold their value if maintained well. Also, in collectibles, focus on the ‘holy grail’ items. For example, the first issue of Action Comics will always have demand, but most other issues won’t.

@Devin
Thanks, that makes sense. Still, it seems really hard to find those rare collectibles before they get too expensive.

Time to go all-in on Beanie Babies. (Kidding, of course!)

Lead and lead propelling devices (hint: guns and ammo).

That was my first thought too.

Why do you think they hold value?

Why do you think they hold value?

Because guns and ammo are always in demand, especially in uncertain times.

Exactly. They’re both practical and can be sold quickly if needed.

Forever stamps are a surprisingly good store of value. Every time the price of postage goes up, you’ve saved money.

Totally agree! I get excited every time the price increases. It’s the slowest investment strategy ever, but it works.

What’s the point of having a lot of them, though?

Mail stuff, obviously.

Liquor that doesn’t need refrigeration, like whiskey or bourbon. Also, honey—it’s the only food that doesn’t spoil.
