I went with an Area 51 Lariat Hybrid. It’s going to replace my wife’s Explorer, which is also our main family car.
The Explorer replaced a Lincoln MKC that worked fine until we had our kid. Once we had a baby in the backseat, the MKC lost most of its storage space since the seats couldn’t fold anymore.
The Explorer is roomy but feels oversized most of the time. It’s a hybrid, so the MPG isn’t bad, but it’s just too bulky for everyday use in town.
I think the Maverick fits perfectly for what we need. The price is fantastic, even for the Lariat. It has good interior space, and with a solid bed cover, there’s plenty of covered cargo room. The MPG is a big win too. Even if it doesn’t quite hit Ford’s claims, it’s still super economical.
I do wish the hybrid had an AWD option, but since we’re in the South, it’s not a must-have. I’ve also got a 4WD F-150 for the rare occasions we get snow.
I’m waiting for my dealership to call me back, but I’m planning on reserving an XL or XLT with the tow package and the 2.0 EcoBoost engine. I’ll be towing small campers and trailers. Still deciding on the color!

Price was a big factor. If you want more than just the basic work truck, the Maverick is way more affordable. Plus, I’m not a fan of the newer Ranger’s design. I drove one while deployed overseas, and it was pretty underwhelming. Also, I really like the unibody design on the Maverick.
@Thayer
That makes total sense. I’m not a big fan of the Ranger’s look or price either. By the time you spec one out, you’re almost in F-150 territory.

I’m leaning towards the First Edition Lariat but can’t decide between the hybrid for MPG or the AWD for winter weather.
I’m going hybrid. I’m not towing anything, and FWD is fine in my area during the winter. I just want a nice commuter, so I also went with the First Edition.
@Zen
Yep, the order is in. The dealership said I should get a confirmation email soon. They didn’t give me a solid delivery date, but they’re hoping for sometime this fall.

My dealer didn’t let me place a specific reservation yet. They just told me I have a spot in line, and they’ll reach out in a few months when they can officially take orders. I’m planning on a Lariat AWD to replace my Nissan Frontier.
@Addison
A lot of dealers seem to be misinformed. The order banks are actually open now, and some people have already received confirmation emails from Ford. Maybe let your dealer know and ask them to double-check.
