Ford has to pay 160 million… anyone surprised?

Ford agreed to pay $165 million as a penalty to settle claims that it failed to recall vehicles with faulty rearview cameras fast enough. This is the second-highest fine given by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It’s funny how Ford just can’t seem to fix their quality issues.

My 2023 F-350 was a disaster and had to be returned under the lemon law after only 8,500 miles. Fingers crossed the 2025 model I ordered is better.

@Taylor
Not to judge, but why stick with Ford after that experience? Are the other trucks just not good enough? I keep hearing mixed things about Ford and their quality seems shaky. What made you give them another shot?

@Payton
Despite the issues, Ford still makes the best heavy-duty trucks out there. The competition from GM and Ram doesn’t match up. I’ve owned four Ford diesels and they were amazing. I’m talking modern trucks here — older models from 2003-2010 were awful, though.

@Ripley
Best selling trucks? I thought they were super popular?

Trucks in general, yes. Especially the F-150, which sells like crazy. But in the heavy-duty market, you don’t have competition from Toyota or Nissan, and the sales numbers are lower.

@Payton
I custom ordered this truck exactly the way I wanted. I do snow plowing and tow about 10,000 pounds, so I wanted the strongest gas truck I could find and Ford was it. Honestly, I think 2022-23 models from any company had more issues than usual. Plus, aside from Honda or Toyota, none of the other brands seem any more reliable. If either of them made a heavy-duty truck, I’d definitely consider it.

@Payton
Funny thing — I’ve ended up with two Fords myself. First one is a Fiesta ST, which is a fun little car and cheap to run. The second is a 2022 Maverick, which has been solid. Back then, used cars were selling for ridiculous prices, so a new hybrid truck for $20k was too good to pass up.

What was wrong with it?

The 7.3 gas engine kept having injector failures.

@Taylor
Spoiler alert: it probably won’t be.

I’ve had nothing but good experiences with my Fords. My wife and I have had about 10 of them since the 90s, and we only went in for recalls a couple of times. Just regular maintenance like oil changes and replacing parts that wear out. Only annoying thing is that Android Auto sometimes acts up and I need to plug it in manually or restart the car.

@Finley
Seems like it’s hit or miss. I know a guy who swears by Ford, but his wife banned him from buying another one after two cars had costly problems that weren’t covered by warranty.

@Finley
Ford has been the most recalled brand for the last three years, and it looks like they might take the title again in 2024. Every earnings call mentions how much they’re spending on warranty repairs and recalls. It’s a huge reason they’re down 8% this year.

@Finley
My family’s had five Fords since the 80s, and every single one started falling apart after hitting 100k miles. We were lucky to get rid of two during the Cash for Clunkers program. Just not reliable cars for us.

@Oak
My brother drove a couple of Fords for work and put over 250k miles on them. He did have to replace parts, but that’s kind of expected with that mileage.

@Oak
I’ve owned four myself, and they all reached 150k miles with just basic maintenance. I do my own repairs, so maybe that helps. But I’ve had similar luck with different brands too.

From what it looks like, Ford’s quality can be a gamble. Some people get solid cars, others end up with lemons. That’s not what I’d call reliable.

Built Ford tough… or is it?
